The following is a transcript of the British edition of The Man versus the State by Herbert Spencer, published in 1885. It reproduced four essays previously published in The Contemporary Review in 1884, with an added postcript. The American edition, also published in 1885, reproduced essentially the same essays, published in The Popular Science Monthly.
